Game on!

There are a number of different board and card games in the Museum Leikki collection, mainly games made in Finland. The founding ideas and rules for games can often be traced back centuries, but new versions are constantly created and games are translated into the Finnish language and culture. Different eras are visible in Finnish games: there is the Farmers’ Tour in Finland from the 1930s, the Dugout Game and the

Dive Bomber Game

from the 1940s, a self-made Sport Game inspired by the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, and popular characters like the Moomin and Rölli troll illustrate more recent board games.

Playing games unites generations. Toddlers are challenged by puzzles and fitting blocks through shaped holes on the Askare-box. Different versions of the quartets card game such as Happy Families offer lessons in animal species, fairy tales, occupations and family roles. Games incorporating both tactics and chance are appealing to the whole family.

Classic games of Finnish childhood include Afrikan Tähti, Kimble, Korona, Fortuna, Monopoly, Tiddlywinks and Mikado, Happy Families, Alias, table hockey and many others.
